What Is an AI Keyboard, and Why Is Everyone Switching?

An AI keyboard puts writing help where you already type instead of in a separate app. Here is what that actually changes day to day, and what to look for before you install one.

An AI keyboard is an ordinary phone keyboard with writing help built into it. You still get a familiar layout and the keys where you expect them. The difference is what sits above them: a panel that can draft a reply, rewrite a sentence you are unhappy with, or change the tone of a message before you send it.

That sounds like a small distinction. In practice it is the whole thing.

The copy-paste tax

Most people already use AI to write. The workflow is almost always the same: leave the conversation, open a chatbot, paste in what you are replying to, read the answer, copy it, go back, paste it in, fix the bits that do not sound like you.

Call it the copy-paste tax. It is maybe forty seconds a message. It is also four app switches, and by the time you get back you have lost your place in the thread.

An AI keyboard removes the tax by moving the AI to where the typing already happens. The keyboard is already in the conversation. It can already see the text field. So the round trip collapses into one tap.

What "built into the keyboard" really means

On Android, a keyboard is not an overlay or a widget. It is a specific kind of app called an Input Method Editor, or IME. When you enable one, the system hands it every text field on the device.

This matters because it is what makes an AI keyboard universal. It is not integrated with WhatsApp, or with Gmail, or with Instagram. It is integrated with text input, which means it shows up identically in all of them, plus your browser, your notes app, and whatever you install next month.

Anything that claims to be an AI keyboard but only works in one or two apps is not really a keyboard. It is an app with a text box.

The four things a good one does

Feature lists get long and mostly unhelpful. In practice, an AI keyboard earns its place if it does four things well.

  1. Drafts a reply from context. You should not have to explain the conversation to it. It reads the field you are in and proposes something reasonable.
  2. Rewrites what you already wrote. Half the time you do not want a fresh draft, you want the sentence you just typed to sound better.
  3. Changes tone on demand. The same message to your manager and to your group chat are not the same message.
  4. Stays out of the way. If the AI panel covers the conversation or throws you into a full-screen editor, you have reinvented the problem you were trying to solve.

What to check before you install one

Keyboards see everything you type. That is not a scandal, it is just how input methods work, but it does mean you should be a little choosier than with a normal app.

Three questions worth asking:

  • When does text leave the device? The honest answer is "when you tap an AI action, and only the text you are working on." Anything vaguer deserves follow-up.
  • Is there a private mode? You want a way to tell the keyboard not to keep history for a given session.
  • Does it still work as a keyboard? If the AI is down, or you are out of allowance, you should still be able to type normally. The AI is an addition, not a dependency.

Where this is heading

The interesting shift is not that AI can write. It is that the writing help is moving down the stack, from a destination you visit to a layer that is just there, in the place you were already working.

Keyboards are the obvious first place for that to happen, because typing is the one thing every app has in common.
